Seattle Mariners

Mariners win Game 2 of the ALCS, final score of 10-3, take 2-0 lead back to Seattle in 7-game series

Julio Rodríguez and Jorge Polanco each hit three-run home runs, Josh Naylor added a two-run shot, and the Seattle Mariners routed the Toronto Blue Jays 10-3 on Monday to take a 2-0 lead in the American League Championship Series.

Seattle, the only major league team that has never hosted a World Series game, now returns to T-Mobile Park needing two more wins in the best-of-seven series to reach its first Fall Classic.

Game 3 is set for Wednesday in Seattle.

Toronto’s offense sputtered again, collecting only six hits — just one after the second inning — and eight total through the first two games of the series.

Star slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 0-for-3 with a walk and is hitless in the series.

Rodríguez set the tone early, launching a three-run homer just three batters into the game off rookie starter Trey Yesavage, a 22-year-old making only his fifth big league start.

Toronto briefly tied the game at 3-3 in the second inning on run-scoring singles from Nathan Lukes and Alejandro Kirk, but Seattle quickly took control again.

Polanco’s three-run shot off reliever Louis Varland in the fifth gave the Mariners a 6-3 lead, and they never looked back.

J.P. Crawford added an RBI single in the sixth, and Naylor — playing through pain after fouling a pitch off his right foot earlier — crushed a two-run homer in the seventh against Braydon Fisher to make it 10-3.

Polanco has been one of Seattle’s most consistent postseason hitters. Six of his first seven hits this October have driven in runs.

He was also responsible for the walk-off single that clinched Seattle’s 15-inning Division Series win over Detroit on Friday and went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in Game 1 of the ALCS.

Both of his earlier postseason homers came off Detroit ace Tarik Skubal, the reigning AL Cy Young winner.

The Mariners’ bullpen continued its dominance, combining for nine scoreless innings through two games while allowing just one hit.

Eduard Bazardo earned the win, while Carlos Vargas and Emerson Hancock each threw two shutout innings.

Yesavage, who took the loss, allowed three runs and four hits in four-plus innings.

He had set a Blue Jays postseason record by striking out 11 Yankees over 5 1/3 hitless innings in the Division Series but generated just two swings and misses on his splitter Monday — down sharply from 11 in that earlier outing.

The Blue Jays made a last-minute lineup change when outfielder Anthony Santander was scratched due to lower back soreness.

Davis Schneider replaced him in right field and went 0-for-3 with a walk.

The game took place under an open roof at Rogers Centre on a breezy, 62-degree Canadian Thanksgiving afternoon, but the sold-out crowd of 44,814 had little to cheer for as Seattle pulled away.

Mariners right-hander George Kirby is expected to face Blue Jays right-hander Shane Bieber in Game 3.

Kirby struck out six and allowed one run on three hits over five innings in his last start, Game 5 of the Division Series.

Bieber, the 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner, gave up three runs (two earned) and five hits in 2 2/3 innings against the Yankees in his last postseason outing.
