Teenager dead, 3 injured after car plunges 80 feet off overpass in SODO

SEATTLE — The Seattle Police Department (SPD) said a teen boy has died after a car fell 80 feet from an overpass in Seattle’s SODO neighborhood on Saturday night.

At around 10:09 p.m., officers found an overturned car below an overpass at East Marginal Way South and South Spokane Street.

A teen boy had been ejected from the car while a 16-year-old girl was still trapped inside - two other men had gotten out on their own with serious injuries, according to Seattle police.

All four were brought to Harborview Medical Center, but the teen who was ejected died from his injuries at the hospital, SPD said.

As of Monday, two are still in the ICU.

A blotter post from Seattle police revealed that before the crash, the car had exited at Harbor Island on State Route 99 heading southbound, hit the barrier on the offramp, and fell 80 feet before landing upside down.

Police have not identified the victim, but friends of the family told KIRO 7 his name was Jayden.

Those family friends said he was a young leader in his community and always did his best to keep younger kids on the right path.

Gary Wayne has been living just a few feet from where the crash happened.

“When I heard the crash hit, I looked up and seen the car coming down,” Wayne said. “It was bad.”

He immediately jumped into action and tried to call 911.

“Just going to help out,” he said. “I’m ex-military so, I was in the army, you got to go and face it.”

Wayne said he stayed with the boys who had exited the car until help arrived.

“I got a bunch of kids, and grandkids,” he said. “I’m just glad it wasn’t them.”

The Port Angeles School District confirmed several of its current and former students were involved.

“It is with great sadness that I share that a student from Lincoln High School and two former students of Port Angeles High School were involved in a car collision in Seattle over the weekend,” the district wrote in a message to families. “Tragically, one student died and the other two students are hospitalized with serious injuries.”

The district will provide counseling and support to those who need it.

The Traffic Collision Investigation Squad is working to determine the circumstances that led up to the crash.

They ask anyone with information to call 206-684-8923.

Jayden’s loved ones will hold a vigil in Port Angeles Monday night at 7 p.m. on the Spit on Ediz Hook Reserve.
