SUV crashes through Ravenna restaurant with patrons inside

SEATTLE — An SUV crashed into the Mioposto restaurant in Ravenna Friday night while patrons were dining inside, the restaurant posted on Instagram.

The Seattle Police Department (SPD) says multiple people inside sustained minor injuries in the crash.

At around 8:20 p.m., SPD says the driver of a white Chevrolet Tahoe ran a red light on 35th Avenue Northeast and swerved into Mioposto with customers inside.

The vehicle destroyed the entire front side of the building and took out its main support beam.

Vania Kurniawati and her friend were sitting at a table by the restaurant for a quiet Fourth of July dinner when the car crashed into the building.

“I saw this car coming out of the corner of my eye, like driving towards us, which was so surreal it kind of looked like it was a movie. And then next thing you know, things came crashing down and I felt glass shards everywhere,” said Kurniawati.

The two of them, along with another customer, were rushed to the hospital.

She had several cuts to her face and arms, while her friend suffered broken ribs and other injuries.

“ I just never thought it would happen because it’s such a like residential area and it seems like really safe,” she said.

She says that the restaurant directed them away from the windows and to the back of the building.

Kate Holman, General Manager of the location, says she is proud of her staff’s quick thinking to take care of their customers.

Holman believes it could have had a very different outcome if it hadn’t been for the slower night due to the holiday.

“If it was a normal Friday night, it would’ve been horrific because every table would’ve been full and people have been waiting outside, and I can’t even, I don’t even wanna imagine what would’ve happened,” she said.

Officers determined that the driver was not under the influence.

However, the driver will be cited and may face significant financial penalties in civil court.

Mioposto’s Ravenna location is expected to be closed for several months to take care of repairs that will cost more than $100,000.

Mioposto is encouraging people to visit their other locations in Mount Baker, Admiral, Mercer Island and Eastlake until repairs are finished.
