SEATTLE — A suspect was found dead inside a home following an hours-long standoff with Seattle Police.
Police were called to an area on E Madison Street, between 32nd and 33rd Avenues East, around 4:51 a.m. for a domestic violence call.
When they arrived, they found a woman in the front yard in distress. Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes said she threw herself at responding officers trying to get help.
Police saw that the woman had been shot in the lower back.
As police were tending to the woman, someone began firing shots at them from inside the home, Barnes said.
Officers returned fire, and no officers were injured.
The suspect barricaded himself inside the home, and SWAT teams worked for hours to get him outside.
At one point, the suspect began throwing furniture. There was also an exchange of gunfire between police and the suspect during the standoff.
It’s unclear if the suspect was killed in the gunfire, or if he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The suspect was arrested and convicted for a double homicide in the late 90s and has a lengthy criminal record, according to Barnes. He was released from prison in 2017.
