Deadly two-car crash shuts down SR 9 in Snohomish County

SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash. — State Route 9 (SR 9) was blocked in both directions Sunday evening after a deadly crash involving two cars in Snohomish County.

The crash happened at 164th Street SE at around 6 p.m.

State troopers and emergency crews responded to the scene, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

Northbound traffic was diverted onto 164th Street SE.

According to a release from the Washington State Patrol, a 61-year-old man from Seattle was driving north along SR 9. He allegedly tried to pass the traffic in front of him, entering the southbound lane, and hitting a car heading south.

The driver of the southbound car, an 82-year-old man from Snohomish, was killed.

WSP reports that the 61-year-old was taken to Providence Medical Center and is under investigation.

SR 9 was reportedly reopened at 2 a.m. the next morning, according to WSDOT.
