Seattle police have arrested three men believed to be connected to a deadly shooting in Pioneer Square that left three people dead and one critically injured, according to authorities.
25-year-old Hakeem Dowdy and 24-year-old Jamarquel Williams were arrested under three counts of investigation of murder and one count of investigation of assault each. The arrests were made around 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, when the Seattle Police Department’s SWAT team took the men into custody at an apartment building in the 3300 block of Gale Place South in South Seattle. The shooting killed 19-year-old Keilani Harris, 27-year-old Briaun Dinish-Lomelli, and 24-year-old August Lastrappe around 1 a.m. on May 17th. A fourth person remains at Harborview Medical Center with injuries from the shooting.
“It’s not fair,” Keilani’s mother Christina Rivas said after the hearing. “No one should be able to roam the streets that wants to pretend to be God and take the life of someone else.”
Rivas was visiting the funeral home, preparing to lay her daughter to rest, when she was informed of the arrests.
“For my daughter to have been killed in this way, it’s not fair, and I hope so far who they have gotten in custody right now and who they’re going to get in custody hopefully soon, spend the rest of their lives in jail and don’t see the light of day because my daughter isn’t going to see the light of day again,” said Rivas.
Two of the men were booked into King County Jail on suspicion of murder and assault, and a third was arrested on an outstanding Department of Corrections escape warrant.
“I do know he was involved in this investigation, he was involved in these crimes,” Seattle Police Detective Eric Muñoz said of the third person arrested, who hasn’t been named at this time.
Police say the case remains active and is being led by SPD’s Homicide Unit as the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office revealed another suspect is still at large nearly a week after the tragic shooting.
“We know Seattle Police is looking at this very closely,” said KCPAO Spokesperson Casey McNerthney. “I’m sure when that have an update there, they’ll refer it to us.”
Seven firearms were recovered from the scene, though police have not yet determined whether those weapons were used in the May 17 killings.
Probable Cause documents revealed SPD used surveillance video near the scene to track the movements of Dowdy and Williams before and after the shooting. In an interview with police, Dowdy claimed he was in Portland, OR that night. When investigators showed him surveillance video from a gas station in Seattle’s Central District, he changed his story.
“When asked where he went after the AM/PM he stated he was driven home by his girlfriend,” the documents read. “When asked to provide more details, Dowdy stated he wanted an attorney and detectives ended the interview.”
“I’m very concerned about that statement,” King County Judge Jill Klinge said. Klinge ordered both Williams and Dowdy to be held on a $5 million bail.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the department’s Violent Crimes Tip Line at 206-233-5000.
“If you have more details, more descriptions, please come forward. I’m begging anybody,” Rivas said. “I can’t describe the amount of pain a mother has to go through. There’s this feeling inside that’s never going to go away.”
