Lakewood standoff: Burglary call turns into day-long standoff, suspect shot, one injured

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — A day-long standoff starts with a burglary call and ends with a suspect shot and another person injured in Lakewood.

Shortly after 9 a.m., Lakewood Police got a call of a burglary on 25th Avenue South.

When police arrived, the suspect ran off and into another business in the area.

At this time, Lakewood Police said that shots were fired but who fired the shots or if anyone was hit was not shared.

For safety precautions, Lakewood police closed nearby streets and asked businesses in the area to evacuate.

Police say that the suspect then barricaded himself at the JNS building with one employee inside at the time.

The victim spoke to KIRO 7 and said he tried to fight the gun away from the suspect but was assaulted before managing to escape with serious injuries.

The victim was taken to the hospital and was released hours later.

Police negotiators arrived at the scene to try and peacefully end the standoff.

Around 6 p.m. the suspect tried to make a run for it and police said shots were fired hitting the suspect.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

By 6:30 p.m., Lakewood Police said the evacuation order was lifted except for 110th Street South between Steele Street and 26th Avenue while police investigated.

The Pierce County Force Investigation Team (PCFIT) took over the investigation and has yet to say who fired the shots.

PCFIT is a team of detectives, forensic investigators, and public information officers from law enforcement agencies throughout Pierce County who investigate the use of deadly force incidents involving officers.
