tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. — Washington State Patrol has confirmed to KIRO 7 that a trooper was involved in a “critical incident” on SR 509 Friday night.

Minimal information has been made available at this time.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reported a crash in the same area around 7:36 p.m. near Port of Tacoma Road and I-705.

The roadway will be closed until further notice.

It’s unclear how the trooper was involved.

WSP has not specified how many people were injured and to what extent.

While Washington State Patrol has not yet said what happened, the Gig Harbor Police Department changed their profile picture to their badge with a black line through it, signifying mourning among law enforcement.

In their post, they wrote: "Our thoughts are with our Washington State Patrol family during this incredibly difficult time. We are deeply saddened by the loss of another law enforcement officer and honor their service, sacrifice, and commitment to protecting others."

This is a developing story.

KIRO 7 will have updates as they become available.
