EDMONDS, Wash. — Washington State Patrol (WSP) says two people have died and three were injured after a car drove off the end of the Edmonds Ferry dock late Tuesday night.
WSP said around 11:10 p.m., they saw a Mini Cooper going 79mph in a 60mph zone on I-5. WSP said they initiated a chase but called it off only one minute later.
Troopers say sometime in the 15 minutes after that, Snohomish County deputies saw the Mini Cooper in Edmonds and initiated another chase. They have not said why the second chase started.
WSP said the Snohomish deputies followed the car through town and onto the Edmonds ferry dock. They say the car then drove off the end and launched into the water.
There was not a ferry nearby at the time of the crash.
Troopers say there were five people in the car. Two of them are dead and three others are at Harborview with injuries.
The massive scene attracted over a dozen people to watch everything unfold on the beach.
Steve Dondero said he was shocked at how many first responders showed up.
“It’s been a huge show of force between police and ambulances, helicopters and boats, and drones flying around,” Dondero said.
First responders on scene included Washington State Patrol, WSP detectives, Snohomish Police, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, Edmonds Police, multiple heavy-duty tow trucks, and South County Fire Rescue.
Connor Morgan also stood nearby watching. He said the Snohomish deputies were behind him, chasing the car as he was driving through town. He said he was shocked when he heard what the driver did.
“Just a full send, a complete full send, 40 feet deep water as well,” Morgan said.
Many witnesses stayed on the beach until the sun rose to watch the chaos.
“You could see the Mini Cooper being lifted up and you could see its underbelly pointing straight at the camera... and water leaking out of it,” Morgan said.
During the investigation, the Edmonds-Kingston route shut down while divers searched the water.
“The ferry showed up but they wouldn’t let it land, and so it was just floating out here aimlessly, it was doing circles and eventually it shined its tracking light on the water trying to help them find people,” Dondero said.
State Patrol is in charge of the investigation. Right now, they told KIRO 7 it’s too early to know why the driver chose to drive off the dock.
