Burien driver crashes through two homes after launching off curb, DUI suspected

A car slammed through two homes in Burien on Monday afternoon after the driver failed to stop at an intersection and went airborne, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 2:30 p.m. to a crash in the 2400 block of South 121st Street.

Investigators say a mid-sized sedan was headed eastbound on South 120th Street and did not stop at the intersection with Military Road South.

The vehicle hit a lane divider at high speed, which launched it into the air.

The car crashed into the side of a home, passed all the way through it, and came to a stop after hitting a second home next door.

No one inside either house was injured, and no pedestrians were hurt.

The driver, the only person in the vehicle, had minor injuries and was detained by deputies.

The King County Sheriff’s Office did arrest the driver who caused the crash for DUI and reckless driving. He is in jail at the SCORE Facility in Des Moines and his bail has been set at $2,000.

KIRO 7 returned to the scene Tuesday and noticed parts of the car in question still scattered on the road. Several neighbors say while the Memorial Day crash will be one to remember, this isn’t the first time a car has hit someone’s property. Mark Kollash, whose home the car went through, says his fence has been damaged several times in the past.

“That’s happened probably about a half a dozen times. Never from somebody coming down that hill,” Kollash said.

A GoFundMe has been set up for the family to help pay for damages to their home. If you’d like to donate, click here.

The City of Burien responded to people’s concerns about safety at that intersection, sharing the following statement from Communications and Public Engagement Manager Devin Chicras:

“The City of Burien is actively in the process of improving safety on our roadways, sidewalks, and neighborhoods. Through extensive engagement with the community, we have heard loud and clear that public safety is a top priority.

The City is currently working on a brand new Comprehensive Safety Action Plan to improve transportation safety and move us closer to eliminating fatalities and serious injuries due to crashes.

We asked, and the community has told us where they feel most unsafe walking, rolling, biking, accessing transit, or driving. We are looking at that data right now and will certainly focus on this intersection specifically as part of our current work."
