Suspected DUI driver allegedly causes 3-car crash, creates massive back-up on US 2 trestle

SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash. — Drivers heading eastbound on US 2 near Home Acres Road were told to seek alternative routes due to a massive traffic backup on Tuesday night.

At around 8 p.m., a three-car crash on the Ebey Slough trestle halted traffic and shut down all lanes on the highway. Traffic was diverted to Home Acres Road.

While officials did say injuries had occurred, details of what led up to the crash were not released until the next morning.

On Wednesday, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) confirmed that three cars were involved, and one person was injured.

According to WSP, all three cars were heading eastbound on SR 1 when the crash happened.

WSP reports that a red Volkswagen Golf was speeding and tried to pass between the two other cars.

The Volkswagen allegedly hit the passenger side of a Jeep Wrangler, causing the Jeep to roll, and hit the driver’s side of a Hyundai Santa Fe, forcing the car into the guardrail.

All three cars were totaled.

The 40-year-old Arlington man driving the Volkswagen was injured and taken to Providence Medical Center. WSP confirmed he would face charges of DUI, reckless driving, felony eluding, obstruction, and hit and run.

The Hyundai was carrying two young children, ages 5 and 6. Both were luckily uninjured. The drivers of both the Hyundai and the Jeep were uninjured as well, but all four were taken to Providence anyway as a precaution.
