1-Line light rail service suspended due to deadly collision in South Seattle

SEATTLE — Link light rail services on the 1-Line between Rainier Beach Station and Tukwila International Blvd. Station are suspended “until further notice” due to a deadly collision along Martin Luther King Jr. Way South.

According to the Seattle Police Department (SPD), officers are investigating a fatal collision near the intersection of MLK Way South and South Norfolk Street in South Seattle.

Officers responded to reports of a car crash in the area at around 5 a.m. and found a pedestrian down in the road.

Police say the pedestrian appears to be a woman in her 30s. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Police determined that the woman walked across the train tracks, westbound, and a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), going south on MLK, struck her. A sedan then crashed into the SUV from behind, creating a two-vehicle collision,” reported SPD. “The SUV came to rest partially on the southbound MLK train tracks. Police cordoned off the south traffic lanes and tracks.”

Traffic Collision Investigation Squad (TCIS) detectives and a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) came to the scene to investigate and evaluate the drivers, who were both young men. Police confirmed that the DRE found no signs of impairment, and nobody was arrested.

Both men had pain with minor injuries.

SPD told travelers to expect significant traffic delays while the road was cleared and the undriveable cars were towed away.

According to an alert from Sound Transit, travelers taking the 1-Line trains should expect delays until further notice and plan ahead for additional travel time.

Anyone with information is asked to call TCIS at 206-684-8923.
