GRAHAM, Wash. — Central Pierce Fire and Rescue (CPFR) says two bodies were found in a home after a house fire on Monday morning.
Crews responded to the scene on Webster Road East and initially found one victim as they worked to put the fire out.
Firefighters then found a second person inside after the fire was extinguished.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office told KIRO 7 the victims were a married couple in their 70’s.
“That’s very sad. I mean, the fire was going for quite a while. It looked like there was a lot of smoke, so I hope they didn’t suffer. That’s terrible,” said neighbor Jenn Wolfe.
Deputies say the smoke caught the attention of a passerby who called 911 out of concern.
“That passerby did go up this long driveway to the house and started banging on the doors, but it was too hot and the flames were too heavy at that point,” said deputy Carly Cappetto.
Smoke from the two-story house fire filled the neighborhood for hours as crews worked to extinguish the flames.
“After I saw the fire trucks go by, it was more like black smoke, so that’s when I realized it was probably something more than just yard debris,” said neighbor Rashinda Hurlson.
Central Pierce Fire & Rescue said water tenders were called out due to a limited water supply at the scene. CPFR also said the second floor of the home was structurally unstable.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but deputies say weather could’ve played a role.
“It was our first very cold night last night. People are starting to use their heat sources, their heaters, and that could potentially be a part of this preliminary investigation. It’s not showing anything suspicious about these deaths or the start or cause of this fire,” said Cappetto.
The Pierce County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
